Jennifer Jacobs
Seamstress
Jennifer, a self-taught seamstress based in Cape Town, started up her independent sewing pattern label, Afternoon, just over a year ago and has already inspired legions of crafty folk and complete novices alike to take needle to thread. Her website and blog offer plentiful tips and tutorials, as well as downloadable patterns for dresses, skirts and even bow ties for the blokes, which can be printed at home. ‘The best part of pattern making is how it can empower others to make things for themselves,’ she says. ‘Sewing is a great way to step outside the cycle of fast fashion and revive a forgotten craft for a new generation.’
Participating in Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives programme this year was ‘an incredible experience’, notes Jennifer, who is currently working on a new pattern and improving her business skills with a short course through the UCT Graduate School of Business. ‘I’m constantly tinkering and trying to improve.’
