Afternoon is getting into the swing of spring with Ideas magazine! Inspired by the bursts of colour heralding a new season, Lizel Cloete takes you through four methods you can use to dye your own fabric with flowers and vegetables. The results are a stunning natural riot of colour. Pick it up when you’re next waiting in the queue for the till at the shop, or better yet, subscribe to Ideas over here.
But what to do with your lovely naturally dyed scraps of fabric? I contributed a quick and easy quilt how-to so that you can transform your material into a light quilt for the coming warmer months. With its exposed seams and simple patchwork design, this tutorial is a good place to start if you’ve never tried your hand at quilting. Toss it over the bed for a bit of colour, or use it as a picnic blanket!
Quilting always intimidated me, but you really can create something wonderful with the simplest of techniques. And there’s nothing quite as self-righteously satisfying as saying, “I made it myself!”
Give it a try and let me know if you do, it would be great to see how yours turns out.
