Take on the Me-Made May challenge! – Afternoon

Take on the Me-Made May challenge!

Better late than never I suppose!

The international sewing community is going crazy for Me-Made May, a lovely initiative started by Zoe from the So, Zo blog. Me-Made May endeavours to encourage fellow sewers, knitters and makers to actually wear and love their beautiful creations.

I think that’s so important. Many of the clothes that I make get relegated to the back of my closet, and I’m not always entirely sure why. Sometimes I think it’s mostly because we put so much pressure on ourselves to make perfect clothing that our own makes never quite match up to our expectations. We envisage ourselves delighted in our new self-stitched frock, but the final product never really lives up. We know the garment intimately. And that’s the problem. From inception, we have cut and cursed and stitched it. We know where all the faults are, and it’s pretty hard to look past. So we just never wear it.

But I reckon most of that is just in our heads. More of a feeling, than a fact. So go on, celebrate your skills, celebrate your self-made clothes, and show them off for the month of May (and beyond)! I encourage you to pop past Zoe’s blog here and take up the mantle of the Me-Made May challenge.

Most pledges are to wear a self-made item every day for the month. But it’s really up to you how you want to participate. A personal challenge of mine is buying loads of fabrics and patterns, and then never following through on making the garment. For this month, I’m going to sew an item each week from what I already have.

So here’s my pledge:

“I, Jenny of Afternoon.co.za, sign up as a participant of Me-Made May 2015. I endeavour to make a self-stitched item out of my stockpile of fabric each week for the duration of May 2015.”

Looking forward to a wonderful month with the vibrant online sewing community!
