Sewing Pattern Review of Burda 02/2013 #133
For my latest creation, I tackled this Burda sewing pattern that I dug up out of the magazines I had.
Although it’s quite a full skirt when completed, and has the appearance of complexity with the pleats and buttoned belt, it’s actually all rather simple in its construction.
The seams are straight up and down the sides with pockets, and the back is closed with an invisible zip. The little belt is a not-so elaborate ruse, as it’s simply a half-belt added to the outside of a basic waistband after the completion of the skirt.
One challenge worth mentioning is the measuring out of the pleats. The sewing pattern quite correctly advises you to fold and baste (stitch in place temporarily) the pleats before sewing up the garment. This was my saving grace, as it turned out that the skirt was slightly too big in the waist. Luckily, the temporary basting stitch allows you the luxury of changing the pleats to ensure a perfect fit, without inducing any seam unpicking rage. Lovely.
So I’d say if you give your pleats some careful consideration, this skirt is an easy sew! A perfect summer picnic skirt, or winter wardrobe warmer when worn with stockings. The one I sewed up was in a soft linen, which is admittedly terribly high maintenance when it comes to ironing, but gives a wonderful finish.
